Although the Vercors remains one of the most isolated places in France, it was thanks to the creation of the Vertigo Routes (Route du Vertige) between 1850 and 1900 that this mountain range was opened up. These sublime roads were built in cantilevers, carved into the rock in cliffs often several hundred meters high. Like the Combe Laval road, they offer travelers exceptional panoramas. A cycling trip in the Vercors is a journey into unknown territory. This impregnable rocky fortress is an unexpected haven of peace between the Alps and Provence.

Day 2: Isère Valley - Bourne Gorges
An improbable journey through narrow gorges with sections of routes cantilevered over the void, others carved into the rock. For millennia, water has carved magnificent gorges into the Vercors limestone. Man took advantage of these routes to carve roads into the cliffside at the end of the 19th century, thus opening the Vercors to the world. These surprising and somewhat secret gorges are now classified as a Sensitive Natural Area.

Pont-en-Royans will immediately surprise you. Its ochre, yellow, and pink houses had already impressed Stendhal. They are built on the rock, overlooking the water, with wooden supports. Unique and picturesque! We then drive towards Combe Laval, one of the most dizzying roads in the Vercors! Aerial, carved into the impressive cliffs, the daring road overlooks the valley, 600 m below. After several tunnels, the road opens up and offers spectacular views of the magnificent Combe Laval cirque.
