Font d'Urle and the Gagère ridges

The hike to Font d'Urle and the Gagère ridges offers the chance to discover one of the most unique landscapes in the Vercors. From the cliffs that tower nearly 1,000 meters above the Quint valley and the Diois region, the view stretches far and wide across the surrounding mountains. This impression of emptiness and grandeur is one of the defining characteristics of Font d'Urle, often considered a distinct territory within the massif. The vast, windswept grasslands, the steep cliffs, and the free-roaming herds sometimes give the area the feel of a high-altitude steppe.

The plateau is also a veritable open book on the geological history of the Vercors. Between limestone pavements, sinkholes, caves, sinkholes, and limestone cliffs, water has sculpted an exceptional karst landscape over millennia. Throughout the hike, these sometimes astonishing rock formations bear witness to the slow work of erosion and remind us that the Font d'Urle plateau is one of the most remarkable geological sites in the massif.

During the summer grazing season, herds are frequently accompanied by livestock guardian dogs. These dogs play a vital role in protecting the animals and contribute to preserving this traditional pastoral activity. To ensure everyone's safety and the smooth running of the transhumance, it is important to follow the instructions posted along the route and to adopt appropriate behavior when approaching the herds.
