We, Homo sapiens, Wise Man

Ten-panel exhibition to be seen outside the Museum, in the undergrowth, from May 2, 2025.

Having appeared in Africa 7 million years ago, the first humans began to venture out 2 million years ago, through successive migrations, towards Asia and then Europe. More recently, 20.000 years ago, they invaded the American continent. Throughout this history, different human species, derived from one another, have coexisted on Earth. Today, only ours remains: Homo sapiens.
Life on our planet is prolific and abundant. It is made up of chance, mutations, selections, and extinctions, and has most recently given rise to the human species.
If the journey of life on Earth were recounted in a 4500-page book (4500 million years), the chapter on primates would be limited to the last 60 pages (60 million years), the chapter on humans to the last 7 (7 million years), and our history as Homo sapiens would only occupy the last third of the last page (300000 years).
Like all living beings, we are not the result of a linear progression.
Our family tree looks more like a sword bush where different human species appeared, each adapted to a particular environment. All have disappeared except for one: ours, Homo sapiens, that is, wise man...
