Following his book *Lou Pastre, les chemins de la transhumance* (The Pastor, the Paths of Transhumance), published in 1999, Emmanuel Breteau returned to meet with livestock farmers and shepherds, both those he has known for 30 years and those of the younger generation. His aim was to take new photographs, but also to listen to each person recount their journey and gather the testimonies of these shepherds and shepherdesses who, willingly or unwillingly, perpetuate an ancestral livestock farming tradition. These voices, too rarely heard in public discourse, form the heart of the book, revealing the complex reality of a profession in constant evolution.

Beyond pastoralism itself, the topics addressed in the testimonies raise questions about our relationship to nature and living things, to the death of animals, to the consumption of meat, to the sharing of mountain territories and, more broadly, rural spaces.

Charles Stépanoff, an anthropologist at EHESS, and Jocelyne Porcher, a sociologist at INRAE, invite us to delve deeper into the very current issues of the link between humans and animals, as well as our relationship to the environment.
