This hike offers a wonderful immersion in the wide-open spaces of the Vercors, between the memory of the Resistance and the high-altitude landscapes. From the Gagères ridges, the panoramas open up across the Vassieux plateau, the High Plateaus, and the eastern edge of the massif. The route also passes near the Resistance Memorial, a reminder of the major role played by the Vercors during the summer of 1944.
The route follows the Font d'Urle plateau, one of the most remarkable Sensitive Natural Areas in the Drôme. For centuries, these vast alpine pastures have hosted the transhumance of horses, cows, and sheep each summer, helping to shape the open landscapes that characterize the site. Joseph Kessel even compared these expanses to an immense steppe "with the sky as its only border."
During the summer grazing season, herds are frequently accompanied by livestock guardian dogs. These dogs play a vital role in protecting the animals and contribute to preserving this traditional pastoral activity.
