Delicate passage

Some sections of the route are inaccessible during the winter season for safety reasons.

Step-by-step itinerary

1/ From the hostel, go to the "Le Grand Echaillon" post (alt. 1162m) on the other side of the road. Follow the direction Bouvante-le-Haut along a path that goes into the forest. Follow the markings carefully as many trails intersect in this area.
2/ Cross a very dark spruce plantation. Cross a track, continue through these conifers then when the forest thins out as you approach buildings, reach the "Col du Lion" (alt. 1191m).
3/ Cross the tarmac, take the track towards Bouvante for a few meters then leave it to go down the path on the left. Follow the markings carefully to reach the ruins of "Gampaloux" (alt. 1040m).
4/ Continue straight along the meadow, reach the undergrowth, then emerge at the place called La Charge. Cross the hamlet and continue along a beautiful track on the opposite side. At the end of this, descend into the woods by a path that winds through the box trees and then through the beech trees. The cliffs below overlook the Lyonne gorges.
5/ Cut across a track, pick it up further on to reach "Bouvante-le-Haut" (alt. 590m). Continue on the road and reach the "Logue" crossroads (alt. 595m). Continue on the D131 to the first houses in Roissards.
6/ Turn right, climb to the top of the hamlet to take the path that goes off to the left and rises along the fields. Go back down slightly, cross the road and take the path opposite that approaches the Toulau stream. The route then begins to climb gently into the valley on the left bank of the stream.
7/ When the path changes banks, the gradient becomes steeper. After a steep climb, emerge onto a track, which you should follow to the left. Turn onto the northwest slope as you approach the cliffs. Be careful, this area can be very dangerous in case of snow, strong winds, or ice.
8/ Continue and join the D199 at "Gardiol" (alt. 1125m). Go straight ahead and reach the "Combe de la Louvaterre" (alt. 1165m). Keep going in the same direction until "Verâtre" (alt. 1198m). Then turn right following the GR93 (white and red markings) and reach the "Refuge d'Ambel" (alt. 1222m), then further on the "Pas du Gouillat" (alt. 1328m). Possibility of going forward to the cross to discover a magnificent panorama of the Gervanne valley and the ridges of the Ambel plateau.
9/ Continue along the GR93 along a beautiful track that leads to the "Col de la Bataille" (alt. 1313m). Please note that this track is closed in winter by departmental decree. Follow the direction of the Grand Echaillon, avoid the tunnel by going around it on the right. Go back down to the road and follow it to the "Pelouse de la Sausse" post (alt. 1330m).
10/ Then leave the tarmac to take the path behind the post which runs along the meadows then into the woods. Join a track, continue downhill to reach the road. Turn left then left again after 100m.
11/ Continue along the GR93 to the “Bergerie du Grand Echaillon” (alt. 1185m) then leave it to go right and join Le Grand Echaillon.
