Maupas Pass

This hike invites you to discover the contrasting landscapes surrounding the Sacha mountain, ranging from forested areas to more open spaces. Along the way, the beech and fir forests gradually give way to clearings and beautiful viewpoints overlooking the Oscence valley, offering a varied perspective on the Vercors landscape.

Mount Sacha also holds a discreet testament to the past. At its summit stands a boundary stone dating from the time when the Vercors region was divided between the Bishopric of Die, the Carthusian monks of Val Sainte-Marie, and the lands of the Duke of Sassenage. These imposing stones served to mark the boundaries of jurisdiction and usage rights over forests and pastures. The Sacha stone still marks the southernmost point of this ancient boundary line in the Oscence valley.

The route also allows you to appreciate the contrast between two faces of the Vercors: on one side, the dense forest that characterizes the area around the Col de Carri, and on the other, a more open environment where the vegetation is lower and the panoramas widen. This alternation of atmospheres is what makes this family hike so charming, ideal for discovering the diverse landscapes of the massif.

IMPORTANT: Livestock guardian dogs (Pyrenean Mountain Dogs) are present on a section of the trail. They can be intimidating and will bark when walkers approach, which is part of their guarding role. However, they are kept in a fenced area behind netting and do not approach hikers directly. Simply stay on the trail and continue calmly.
