Between old Roman road, unusual passages and panoramas over the Royans, this hike reveals a little-known natural and historical heritage of the Vercors.

This hike offers the chance to discover the diverse landscapes surrounding Oriol-en-Royans, from farmland and woodlands to small canyons and viewpoints overlooking the Royans valleys. The route leads to the Pas de l'Écho, a natural pass offering beautiful views of the hills that mark the transition between the Vercors massif and the surrounding hills.

One of the route's major attractions lies in its historical heritage. Part of the trail follows the traces of an old Roman road that once formed the main link between Oriol-en-Royans and Léoncel. Long before the construction of modern roads, this path allowed locals, travelers, and goods to cross the Vercors mountains.

The route also follows the Léoncel, a small stream that has carved a discreet canyon through the vegetation. Its cool, shady surroundings contrast with the more open spaces found on the higher ground and contribute to the diversity of the landscapes traversed.

Near the route are also the ruins of the Château des Flandaines. Built to control the Royans passes, this castle was part of the Royans princes' defensive system before being dismantled at the end of the 16th century, following the Wars of Religion. Today, a few vestiges still recall this turbulent history.

Step-by-step itinerary

Starting from Oriol-en-Royans (parking lot at the southern exit of the village), head towards Léoncel and Pas de l'Echo . Leave the main road and take the small path uphill to the right, alongside a wall (follow the yellow and green markers). The route joins a road and passes through the hamlets of Les Grippats and La Bourrelière. The walk continues along a path through woods and meadows, leading to the locality of Les Merles.

Cross the departmental road (watch out for cars), always following the direction of Pas de l'Echo , go up to the hamlet of Tamée then take the departmental road for 200 meters to reach Gagnas.

At the Gagnas crossroads , take the left-hand path which gradually descends into the undergrowth. Cross the departmental road again (at the place called Le Bedaud) then a little further on take another small road, still following the yellow and green markings towards Pas de l'Echo.

At a walking pace, follow the GR 9 trail. The return to Oriol-en-Royans involves passing first by La Passerelle and then L'Usine de la Plaine . Next, take the path above the parking area that runs along the left bank of the Val Sainte-Marie stream. Cross the bridge and climb to the top of the hill, passing near the ruins of the Château des Flandaines. Continue towards Saint Martin le Colonel via Les Rats , then turn left towards La Freydière , Les Vinays , and Tallard , returning to the starting point.
