Forest hike in the Grand Echaillon estate. The route remains mainly in the forest and allows for a wonderful discovery of this environment where many plant species grow side by side.

This predominantly forest hike invites you to explore the preserved landscapes of the Léoncel state forest, following the old paths linked to the history of the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of Léoncel.

The route crosses the Grand Échaillon estate and runs mostly under forest cover, offering complete immersion in a rich and diverse natural environment. Along the way, you will discover a wide variety of tree species as well as fauna characteristic of the Vercors forests.

Between historical heritage and the discovery of biodiversity, this walk is an ideal experience for lovers of nature and wide open spaces.

Step-by-step itinerary

From the Grand Echaillon car park (alt. 1162m) , walk along the right side of the inn buildings and go up to the left just before the start of the cross-country ski trails.

At the crossroads of the Bergerie du Grand Echaillon (alt. 1185m) , turn left to follow the white and red markings of the GR93.

Join the D199, follow it to the right for a few meters, then turn right again onto a track that climbs into the woods (Ravin de Pissenible). Stay on this wide track, carefully following the waymarking, and emerge onto the D199 at the Pelouse de la Sausse signpost (1330m altitude) . From there, you can make a round trip to the Col de la Bataille to admire the view of the Gervanne valley on one side and Bouvante-le-Haut on the other. Returning to Pelouse de la Sausse , leave the GR93 and take the road downhill (marked with yellow and green signs).

At the end of the first bend, leave the paved road and take the path on the right that descends towards Grand Echaillon . Continue on the main track, carefully following the waymarking. After traveling 1,5 km from the D199, look for a path branching off to the left at a bend. Take this path to reach the hamlet of Baraque de Carpe (1140 m altitude).

Turn left onto the beautiful track following the direction of Grand Echaillon . Reach the Col du Lion (alt.1191m).

Descend along the path opposite, carefully following the markings. Cross a very dark spruce grove and return to the starting point.
