Vercors Prehistory Museum

Around the flint-cutting archaeological site, listed as a Historic Monument, discover the conquest of the Vercors by our ancestors: minerals, bones, weapons, jewellery... and flint tools, fashioned by craftsmen based on the site of the current museum.

An archaeological site housing a flint knapping workshop found intact!

Flint knapping demonstration: out of season, hours adapted to the public and in July and August at 11 a.m., 14 p.m. and 30 p.m.

This site museum - a large wooden chalet in the forest of Vassieux - houses a flint knapping workshop found intact just as it was abandoned by prehistoric men 5000 years ago.

Through the minerals, tools, bones, pottery, weapons found during the last 30 years of archaeological excavations, you will be surprised by the capacity of adaptation of the man vis-a-vis the evolution of his environment and the climate.
You will travel through the Vercors alongside the first inhabitants: Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons, following their way of life: housing, hunting, funeral rites, exploitation of flint.

The museography is interactive and fun:
- illustrated panels and showcases,
-videos on hunting and fire,
- exploration drawers for manipulating objects,
-projection of a film on a large screen explaining excavation techniques.

After visiting the archaeological site classified as a Historic Monument, you will attend a demonstration of flint knapping by a facilitator.

Finally, experimental workshops allow you to master the techniques of fire production, hunting, art, adornment and archaeological excavations (by reservation, program on the museum's website).
