Welcome to the Vercors Drôme, a little corner of paradise for nature lovers, adventurers, and anyone who enjoys putting one foot in front of the other on the trails. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a novice eager for new experiences, there's one golden rule to follow. : never underestimate the mountainSo, to ensure your hike doesn't turn sour, here are our tips for preparing your itinerary in the Vercors.

The Vercors is a real gem for hikers. Between the magnificent landscapes, the dense forests, and the endless plateaus, there's something for everyone. But be careful, don't let its average appearance fool you. montains ! The trails can be technical, and the Hauts Plateaux Reserve, while magnificent, is a protected area where adventure is wild and the phone network is... how can I put this... non-existent? So, choose your route carefully based on your level and experience. A balcony route could be dramatic with a baby carrier, for example.

You are here to enjoy yourself, not to struggle!

Reading a map is a bit like deciphering a secret message. It requires attention, patience, and, let's face it, a little geeky flair. But in the Vercors, it's essential! Before you set off, take the time to study your topographic map. Note the elevation changes, locate path intersections, and note any water points. For short hikes, you can start with a Carto Guide: It's a simplified map of the marked trails that you'll find at your favorite tourist office 😉

Be careful, in the Vercors there are not many of them and it is not guaranteed that the springs always flow. So remember to take enough water and check thestate of the sourcesIn the Highlands, there are no illuminated signs to tell you where to turn, so it's best to know where you're going.

3. The weather, your best friend… or not

Ah, mountain weather... It's a bit like Will Smith at the Oscars: everything's fine, then suddenly you get slapped in the face and you didn't see it coming. One moment you're in the blazing sun, and the next you're soaked to the skin and the fog makes it hard to see the tips of your shoes. Before you leave, check the weather for today, but also for the following days if you're going on a backpacking trip. If you have the slightest doubt, don't hesitate to postpone your outing.

The weather in Font d'Urle is so changeable that even the locals fear it. When the fog rolls in, it becomes impossible to tell the difference between dry land, the sky, and the cliffs. We'll let you imagine what might happen.

Remember, it's better to be a safe hiker than a lost hiker...or worse!

Yes, hiking is great, but sitting down to admire the scenery is even better! Plan regular breaks, not only to catch your breath, but also to enjoy the panoramas of the Vercors.

When hiking, you shouldn't wait until you're tired or hungry to rest, drink, and eat. When that happens, it's already too late, and you're already drawing on your reserves.

So take a little break sheltered under a tree or a snack overlooking the cliffs, it's priceless. And above all, don't forget to drink regularly: water is key. And as the great Jean-Claude Van Damme says, enjoy it, "in 20-30 there won't be any left!"

The Vercors is not the Champs-Élysées. You need to be well equipped! A good pair of hiking boots, a backpack with everything you need (first aid kit, compass, headlamp), and clothes suitable for the weather: cold, hot, rain, be prepared for anything! Even if the sun is shining, always bring a waterproof jacket. You never know, it might decide to play tricks. You can also buy or rent your equipment when you arrive in the Vercors. Plus, you'll be supporting local businesses. Isn't that great!

Okay, let's not kid ourselves, in the Hauts Plateaux Reserve, you probably won't have a signal, and it's not just because you're with Free. Don't panic, it's the opportunity to disconnect and fully enjoy nature and take lots of photos (and share them with your favorite Tourist Office 😉 ). But before leaving, make sure you've told someone your route and your return time. It may seem old-fashioned, but in case of a problem, it's very practical

Remember, there's no shame in giving up. If the weather turns, you feel tired, or you're unsure of your route, it's best to turn back. The Vercors will always be there for the next adventure, and safety must remain your priority. As the saying goes, it's better to return home frustrated than injured (or worse...).

The Vercors is a fantastic mountainous terrain, but it requires respect and a good dose of preparation. So, get out your maps, sharpen your adventurous senses, and set off to explore this magnificent territory in complete safety. And above all, don't forget to look up from time to time to admire the landscape and the stars... You are in one of the most beautiful corners of France, after all!

Have a good hike, and see you soon on the Vercors trails!
