A tourist office is a public service organization, whose mission is defined by the Tourism Code. Article L133-3 specifies:
"The tourist office welcomes and provides information to tourists, as well as promotes tourism in the municipality or group of municipalities, in coordination with the departmental committee and the regional tourism committee. It helps coordinate the work of the various partners in local tourism development. It may be responsible for […] developing and implementing local tourism policy and local tourism development programs."

In 2017, as part of the NOTRe Law, the Royans-Vercors Community of Communes merged the two existing offices: that of the Pays du Royans and that of the Vercors.
From this union a new organism is born, in the legal form of a EPIC (Public industrial and commercial establishment) : the Vercors Drôme Tourist Office.

Since then, its missions have been clarified through an objectives agreement entrusted by the Royans-Vercors Community of Communes (CCRV). They are of public interest and include:

  • welcoming and informing visitors,
  • the promotion of tourism in the region, in conjunction with the departmental committee and the regional tourism committee,
  • coordination of local tourism stakeholders.

In 2024, two additional missions were added to this base:

  • assistance in defining the tourism strategy (development and implementation of the tourism plan), in collaboration with the DTAT service of the CCRV,
  • the collection of tourist tax

The Tourist Office is headed by a Board of directors, a deliberative body which defines its strategy.
It brings together 13 members, with a majority of elected officials designated by the CCRV (7 seats) and socio-professional representatives from the tourism sector (6 seats).

This creation followed the emergence of tourist information centers at the end of the 19th century.rd century, the first being founded in Grenoble in 1889. These structures aimed to improve the visitor experience and promote the territories. France played a pioneering role in this area, notably with the creation of a tourist office in London in 1920.
