Between forests, clearings and remarkable viewpoints, this hike reveals a wilder side of the Vercors and offers a superb panorama of the High Plateaus and the eastern edge of the massif.

La Roche du Mas is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in this part of the Vercors. From this natural promontory, the view encompasses the High Plateaus, the eastern edge of the massif, and the vast forests stretching towards the Col de Carri. From the Grand Veymont to the Grande Moucherolle, the highest peaks of the Vercors form a particularly spectacular ridgeline here.

But the Roche du Mas also tells an older story. Extending from the ridge is the Serre des Pendus, whose name recalls the dark days of the Wars of Religion that shook the Vercors region in the 16th century. As is often the case in the mountains, place names have survived the centuries and preserve the memory of events now forgotten.

Facing this vast panorama, the Roche du Mas offers much more than a simple viewpoint: a meeting point between the beauty of the Vercors landscapes and the memory of those who inhabited them before us.

Step-by-step itinerary

Start at the Place Pietri car park in La Chapelle-en-Vercors. Take the GTV route, leave the village and reach Les Bernards.

Join the Côtes , then the Talviviéres (briefly passing through the Tours du Vercors Drôme, which you should follow heading south). Descend to La Franconnière near the Cime du Mas, then to Le Chargeau , and continue to Les Réveilles.

From there, this hike takes on a wild character, gradually winding its way through boxwood and beech trees to Libouse and Combe Libouse.

Climb gradually to Serre Charbonnière , then to Roche du Mas to enjoy the magnificent panorama.

The return to La Chapelle-en-Vercors is via a descent to Les Fraisiers . Then head north to reach La Ratz and a forest path leading to Le Collet.

From this crossroads, return to the village via Les Baumes , Les Chaux before reaching Sous le Château and Le Château.
