This short hike leads to the Pas du Grand Échaillon, a natural viewpoint offering a beautiful panorama of the Léoncel valley and the Vercors cliffs. The term "pas" refers to a passage allowing passage through the cliffs that encircle the massif. For centuries, these natural passages were used by locals, shepherds, and travelers to connect the valleys to the plateaus, before becoming the preferred routes for hikers. Even today, the Pas du Grand Échaillon remains a true gateway to the vast open spaces of the Vercors.

The Grand Échaillon area is also known for its vast high-altitude forests, home to discreet wildlife and flora characteristic of the massif. Between beech groves, fir forests, and clearings, this walk offers the chance to discover one of the most peaceful atmospheres in the Vercors while enjoying a remarkable view of the Léoncel landscapes.

Step-by-step itinerary

From the Grand Echaillon parking lot (alt. 1162m), walk along the right side of the inn buildings, follow the yellow and green markings of the GTV (Grande Traversée du Vercors) and go up to the left just before the start of the cross-country ski trails.

Reach the crossroads at the Bergerie du Grand Echaillon (1185m altitude). From there, follow the GR93 trail, marked with white and red blazes, straight ahead to the Pas du Grand Echaillon (1192m altitude). Do not descend to the right into the forest with the GR trail, but continue along the track to the viewpoint 50m further on.

Turn right, always following the white and red markings of the GR93 towards the Pelouse de la Sausse.

Upon arrival on the D199, leave the GR93 to take the road on the left (yellow and green markings) and return to Le Grand Echaillon.
