An accessible hike alternating between woods and remarkable viewpoints.

The Allier forest boasts a remarkable diversity of trees and shrubs. However, for a long time, it was primarily exploited for charcoal, the main resource of this region. It was transported down the Allier Pass, via the mountain pass, to the cannon foundries of Saint-Gervais on foot, or to the forge at Tourte (a hamlet south of Saint-Martin). A few platforms along the roadsides still mark the sites of former charcoal kilns.

Park at the place called Sandron, taking care not to obstruct the farm next door.

Delicate passage

Trails can be slippery in wet weather and caution is advised near the Pas de l'Allier viewpoint.

Step-by-step itinerary

Park at the Sandron locality (be careful not to block the farm entrance), follow the road north then take the first right leading to the GTV VTT. Follow signs for Bartelay , Le Briac , Le Pin and La Plateforme.

Then, always follow the GTV VTT, admire the viewpoint of the Rochers du Bournillon, pass by the Cabane à Lili et Micoulas to reach the Pas de l'Allier (1171m).

Go down to the left, pass through Dorgne and, still following the GTV VTT, reach Sandron.
