Description
This cave is rich in stalactites and stalagmites. It delights the underground explorer who takes the time to contemplate these crystalline frescoes. The Ferri`res cave has been studied mainly for its underground fauna and ecology.
The Latin word for ferrie`re is ferraria, which formerly referred to the location of an iron mine and the steelmaking of its deposit. This name is found in various places in France where iron quarries or factories existed. The name of the Ferri`res cave likely comes from this origin. Today, we no longer find any trace of any possible "industrial" or "artisanal" exploitation of this ore. The first written records, mentioning the cave, date back to 1882. The famous founder of speleology, Alfred-Édouard Martel, mentioned it in 1897. The last explorations were carried out by the Speleo-Club du Vercors in 1946.
